After many years of leaving my expensive watches under lock and key 24/7, I woke up and realized they are worth nothing to me if they see no wrist time when I am out and about. If I can't afford to have whatever happens to a watch while I'm traveling, I can't afford to own that watch. So yes, I travel with my expensive watches. Of course I am reasonable and keep them from any sort of abuse. I wear the right watch for the occasion.

I do, but I always take 3 factors in mind:

1. Is it replaceable? Can I go into a boutique/AD/jomashop/ebay and get the exact same model? then I'll travel with it

2. Is it a watch I can keep on the entire time? Biggest watch thefts happen when you store it in the safe, your bag or a locker. So the watch needs to be something I am not afraid to go swimming with. So I need something with at least 100 meter water resistance.

3. What is the country's and the watch's crime factor? Is it a country where I might get robbed at gun point? I keep the more expensive pieces at home. Is it a watch where a thief's eyes would light up? It stays home

I will wear the nicer sports watches on trips. Since I rarely travel where I need to tux up and rarely will I go to a place and not work up a sweat doing something outdoors, I won't bring the nice dress watches.

Within reason, they go everywhere.

I don’t bring an expensive watch where it might cause me to targeted or robbed.

I don’t bring an expensive watch where other I am dealing with might develop an unfavorable impression of me, or jealousy.

Incidentally my wife wants to borrow the Sub for a girls trip to Europe and I'm worried she may not be safe wearing that clear bling on her wrist esp if they are out late. Worried for her that is not just the watch.
That would be getting a hard no from me for the exact reason you listed. Borrow it on a trip when you're with her, sure why the heck not, but on a girls trip I wouldn't be letting that happen for everyone's safety.

Regarding travelling with my expensive watches, yep, but my most expensive pieces are both about $800ish and could be easily replaced if I needed to for whatever reason.

My GMT watch doesn't happen to be my most expensive or even objectively expensive, so I had to vote no.

I like GMT/UTC/dual time complications, so there may very well come a time when I own an expensive example, and how stupid would it be to own such a thing and not travel with it...?
With you there..have four GMT's but only travel with the Ball.

Same reply as everyone else. I'm sensible about it. I certainly don't travel with a watch roll. Usually take my SMP for beach holidays.

No on that one. Worried for the watch.

After living in 8 countries in 3 different continents, I try to avoid stereotypes, use common sense and be careful whenever is needed.

  • I don't wear watches at all (affordable or expensive) in potential conflictive areas or during night if I have to walk, neither at home nor abroad
  • I don't take more than a watch if I am not gonna stay in a hotel where they can sleep in a safe (i just wear the one on my wrist).
  • I don't take more than 3 watches with me to avoid issues in customs
  • I don't wear neither watches nor any other expensive items (shoes, belts, jackets, bags, chains, etc) in depressed areas where you will look simply out of place taking unnecessary risks
  • (...)
However, I do travel with my watches, everywhere, and I wear them for business meetings, for social events, for outdoor activities, for tourism, and for the pleasure to enjoy the watch in a special location, just taking the normal precautions I would also take at home.

Needed a pic

It was/is my travel watch for 15 years. A Rasta mon shuttle driver in Atlanta was the only person that ever said anything about it. He tapped it as he walked down the aisle and said, "Nice Omega Mon!"

Typically I only wear one watch while travelling and wear it all the time, even when I sleep

Depending where I go,I can just wear a gshock or a seiko if I go to a place like Rio

Funny thing is,most of my favorite travel watches don’t even have gmt...they have quickset hour hand though...

My most expensive is my Omega, and i usually take it with me when i go abroad. If i can wear my most expensive watch in my country day or night, i don't see how it is not safe to wear it in another country. It won't be lost too since its gonna be on the wrist most of the time. And when i travel, i only bring one watch, and that's the one around my wrist. And contrary to popular belief, no one will notice the watch you are wearing, so wear what you want.

As for me, i prefer to take my Omega coz i know its very reliable in every conditions.

I don't take more expensive watches such as Rolex, VC, JLC with me nor do I carry nice vintage pieces. Why take the chance? I will take my Omega SMPc with me because I don't think of it as expensive and I could get another if I needed to without too much difficulty.

I'll take an expensive watch to a big city in the US or Europe. I would not do the same for some other countries, but I guess it would depend on region. If it's a questionable area, I would bring one of the microbrands, such as Zelos or something. I wouldn't be too devastated if I lost one of them even though they are awesome.
