NOMOS Tangente is in front of me!!

After a week long wait, the watch finally arrived!
It is just as beautiful as I expected and the watch looks very classy!
But one thing is bothering me… I can hear it tick but I can't see the movement that I have been seeing on Youtube.
I was already over-stretched on my budget so I ordered one without the sapphire crystal back. Besides, I always loved the stainless steel back on classic watches. Now I am feeling a sort of a buyer's remorse.
Before I ordered the watch I had no doubt I will like the stainless steel back better. After I ordered, I was sure it was a good decision.
While it was on its way, I was certain I won't care if I can't see the movement. I thought I would just go Online and watch the videos on Youtube when I want to see the movement in action.
However, now with the watch in front of me, I want to see the inside. *sad*
I wonder how much time I will spend looking at the movement. Will wrist time far outweigh the time spent looking at the back of the watch?
Will it worth returning this watch and going through the pain of waiting another week for the new watch to arrive after paying $280 more?
What would you do?

My Nomos Club has a solid back. Though it hasn't really bothered me, I eventually bought my wife an Orion 33 with a display back so everytime I feel like looking at an Alpha movement, I look at that one! Even then, I take a glance at the movement only every few weeks or so. The main advantage that I've encountered with the display back, is that you get to share the beauty of the movement with others. I've had WIS who really enjoy the details of the movement, and non-WIS who are enthralled by the decoration.

By the way, I find smooth surface backs (solid-polished or sapphire glass) a little uncomfortable as they tend to stick on one's wrist. With a solid-back, you can have it sand-blasted or brushed which would make it a more comfortable daily wearer.

So, in conclusion, I'd say keep and enjoy your Tangente, and in due time, get another watch with a display case-back.
After all, what are the chances that you'll stop at one watch. Oh yes, and Nomos will be happy to change the back to a display one when you send it in for servicing (for a fee, of course).

I would keep it, then when I sent it back for it's first service (Nomos have VERY cheap service rates) I would get them to put on a display back, it would be like getting a new watch...

Honestly, I would probably send it back now, I find I never bond with a watch if their is something that bugs me from the start. I have a watch that I spent a LOT of money on that I try to think of reasons to skip it in rotation and I knew it the day I got it in, should have switched the watch then, now it is too late.

Edit: I have another idea, see what Nomos with charge for a sapphire caseback alone (after you explain you want to return the one you have) and just switch them out. I wouldn't think twice about changing a back on a 3ATM watch myself but it wouldn't cost you more than $10 at most watchmakers. This also might give you some time since you said you were already stretching your budget...

I'd probably swap it now. A few hundred isn't much in the long run. And that movement is gorgeous. I've got an Orion 38 here actually.

As ilitig8 points out, there's no reason (in principle) that you can't swap a display back on it in the future though if you want. It might have to go back to Nomos, but I don't think they'd protest (as long as you were will to pay, of course). Probably cheaper to swap it now though.

The alpha movement is finished so well, and the german silver they use sparkles a hella lot, i really do enjoy my display back tangente tbh.

I think youll keep regretting not getting the sapphire back and so in your eyes itll never b perfect. Just send it back, spend the extra $ and wait a few weeks and youll have something you can love and enjoy completely - its gotta be preferable to a life long gripe with the watch, right?

If it bothers you enough to start this thread, the only sensible move is to return and opt for the sapphire case back. It is unlikely this feeling is going to go away, and its not that expensive of a solution. With a watch as nice as a Nomos, you should not settle and get what you really want.

When the day comes that I buy myself an Orion, I will get it with the sapphire back. However, with all the watches I currently own with a display back, I've never looked at them more than a couple of times. So I don't think it would be worth sending it back.

I somehow managed to post this despite using Tapatalk.

I find that the longer I own a watch the less I look at the back but acknowledge that I may be in the minority. While that is obviously not a dive watch I still worry about adding another point of entry for water, which a display back is. I do like the idea of buying a back from Nomos and just swapping it out- then you have both. (That's the schizophrenic in me talking)
Congrats on a beautiful watch!

I would send it back. I need the display for the nomos.

I find an open back is much more then something cool n pretty to look at (though that is plenty in itself to have it) It is also a great conversation accessory to have. It's great for someone who is not familiar with mechanical watches and the difference between them with quartz it's so easy to flip a watch over and let it speak for itself. It also captured newbies' interest. I have recently got a friend into wanted a serious mechanical watch after he seen the display back on my Maurice Lacroix which was pretty cool haha

I paid $1900 for closed back.
Open back costs $2180.
$280 is the difference.

$280 is almost my car payment.
$2180 is almost my paycheck.
When I think rationally, I shouldn't buy the open back.
However, I am a watcher/observer. The best route at this point would be to buy the sapphire back and get it replaced at a watch shop. Or is it a simple enough job for one to do it at home with a proper tool?

+1 on returning it. It's a shame to cover up that work of art when you have the choice.

Great watch. Wear it in good health.

I don't think it was a stupid mistake but, it is a relatively small price difference and it bothers you enough to post an opinion poll on WUS. Go ahead and either swap it or buy a display back - otherwise it will nag at you.

I'v told this story before but, many years ago I bought a bicycle which, through a dealer screw up, was the wrong color and had the wrong components. Even though the bicycle I recieved was a nicer and more expensive bicycle, it wasn't what I wanted. I hated that bicycle and, in fact, I still hate it because 20 years later it still sits in my shed as a reminder to never accept a substitute, even if others think it is just as good or even better...

The urge will pass. I'm jumping up and down looking at the movement on a new watch, but I can't remember the last time I flipped over one of my watches to see the back.....HOWEVER if it's ruining the enjoyment of a watch, then you must get it changed. A watch is supposed to make you happy. If you're not happy, then.....
